…A fantastic day, an immense blue sky encompassed us as we continued our ‘wild’ horseback ride across the Andes high plateau. The air is crisp, light but freezing, despite the tentative warm rays of the sun. The bare, bleak land is a palette of spent greys, pallid blues, wan greens and faded ochres. Deep fissures, small craters with irregular edges, fluid mud puddles and small muddy magma lakes characterise the moonscape we are making our way into: it is the area, the Sol de Manana geo-thermal field, ten square kilometres of broiling land which stretches out, antique, before our eyes. We are at an altitude of five thousand metres! It feels like we are witnessing the formation of the earth. Will we meet dinosaurs too?
